7 Things To Do In New York City
New York City — a playground for adventure & growth! Shortly after moving here 10 years ago, I discovered how much I love interactive activities that emphasize communality. So, forget about going to the movie theater, here are 7 activities to do in New York City that open up the third eye, elicit laughter, and make you feel a part of the world!
7. Airbnb Experiences (www.airbnb.com)
We all know Airbnb. Though what you may not know is the “Experiences” off-shot that offers unique and flavorful experiences that are presented by local hosts in the area. And would you believe it? This is where Dr. Honeybrew’s Turkish Coffee fortune reading experience (aka “The Turkish Coffee Therapy”) got its start!
Check out Ben’s sandwich tour, Gordon’s jazz tour, & Amy’s Romantic Foodie Photoshoot for some cool offerings on Airbnb Experiences.
6. Fort Tryon Park (www.forttryonparktrust.org)
Inwood - the vibrant upper Manhattan neighborhood that is the quintessential mecca for Dominican culture, foods, and festivities in New York City. On an ordinary day, locals play checkers, enjoy beers, and dance fervently on the streets to an unending stream of rhythms and melodies. Now, that is what I call fun!
But when solitude breezes through, I always escape to Fort Tryon Park. This park is the epitome of serenity — a soul replenisher that adjusts your equilibrium so that you may continue partying, having fun, and laughing out loud in the world once again. Also an excellent picnic spot!
5. People Eating & Crying Photoshoot (www.instagram.com/peopleeatingandcrying)
For one of a kind, fun and unique New York City experience, look no further than Mark Grochowski’s “People Eating & Crying” photoshoot experience. Inspired by the cooking style of his grandmother in Poland, Mark uses horseradish to make his participants “cry” and photograph them while eating their favorite foods.
Contact Mark directly here to schedule a shoot yourself. Eat and cry your heart out at the same time!
4. Everything Immersive (www.everythingimmersive.com)
This is another platform that is comparable to Airbnb Experiences - but with a little caveat. Everything Immersive’s experiences lean more toward the avant-garde and experimental. One such experience takes participants on a unique theater show excursion that takes place in random abandoned New York City storefronts!
3. Magnet Theater (www.magnettheater.com)
There is no better place than Magnet Theater to experience an offering of improv comedy & theater in New York City. Shows revolve heavily on audience participation and requests, sometimes even bringing the audience onto stage! The breaking down of these walls forges unforgettable nights of communion and laughter, and best of all, some of these shows are completely free!
2. Sundaes & Cones (www.sundaescones.com)
What good is life if you can’t appreciate a little sweetness now and then? Sundaes & Cones is hands down my favorite ice cream shop in New York City. Try their lavender, black sesame, and wasabi flavors for some absolutely mind bending taste excursions. They have great magazines to read there too.
1. Dr. Honeybrew’s Turkish Coffee Therapy (www.drhoneybrew.com)
Drum roll please! I saved the best for last - and you guessed it! Dr. Honeybrew’ Turkish Coffee Therapy has rightfully been crowned the number 1 spot on our list. But not just on this list — on many lists! View all our features on Forbes, CNN, Travel + Leisure, and (very soon) The New Yorker!
The Turkish Coffee Therapy is a visually interactive, and group-driven fortune telling experience unlike any other. Honoring the ancient coffee ceremonies of the past, a communal experience amongst strangers is invoked to create something that is cosmic, insightful & entertaining all at once! Your coffee grinds are projected onto a giant monitor allowing for all of the symbols and figures to be analyzed right before your eyes.
More than an opportunity to enjoy coffee, sweets, laughter, and soothsaying, the communal aspect of “The Turkish Coffee Therapy” inspires colorful conversations that heighten the collective experience for all in attendance. Just as it is conducted per Turkish tradition.
